Mix & Match Dress

hand painted and dyed canvas
2018-2019

This dress is made up of 3 main panels plus the sleeves and a high neck undershirt. The different parts can be mixed and matched with each other: the wearer can choose from eight main panels and four sleeves. To make the mixing and matching possible, I used zippers for the main parts, and ribbons for the sleeves (the ribbons each have small snaps). I wanted to experiment with how different colors and patterns look next to one another. The gloves also play a part in this: one mimics the sleeve of the dress, as its parts are also connected using ribbons and eyelets. The other glove, made of scrunched up satin, mimics the wavy pattern of the dress. The dress panels are made of white denim dyed various colors or painted with black patterns. The gloves are made out of faux leather, satin, and a plush knit fabric, while the lining is taffeta.
