Process Puppet Fabrication - Main Characters note: the bear character “Mike” was cut from the final film but went through all the development stages For the main characters the armatures were made with brass tubing, aluminum armature wire, copper wire, floral wire which was attached together with epoxy. Each puppet has tie down in the feet. Foam was applied with sprayable glue and cut to the desired shape of each puppet. Next their “skin/fur” was added by the methods of sewing fabric over the foam or dry needle felting. To achieve this I used fabrics with minimal pattern and painted only with solid bright colors. I primarily drew inspiration from children’s TV imagery and dollhouses. There were 5 set pieces all together. Each was treated as an independent set, being animated separately in front of a green screen. In post production I composited each panel together to create one large image of a perfect little town. To ensure that the camera movements (the big zoom out) stayed the same throughout each pass, I used a motion control camera that I&nbsp; programed within Dragonframe. Set Fabrication I used foamcore for the houses, either spraypainting them or spray gluing fabric to them. For the windows and doors I used wooden dowels and plastic to make the glass reflective. The trees are made of wood pieces and various fabrics. The puppet has a simple wire armature with tie downs in the feet. I used oven-baked clay for the head and medical tape and latex for all other parts of the puppet that show skin. The eyes and mouth were applied using vaseline. Her clothing is made out of vintage handkerchiefs. Her hair is made from grass for architectural models which I stiffened with latex and glue. The set is constructed from a painted foam core and the toilet is made of polymer clay. Details were added with acrylic paint. The finished squares are shown from not only the front but also the back — the part of the quilt that in a finished piece would stay hidden. Because it is shown here, the film speaks about process. Each square holds within it the power to be ‘animatable’. Since the corners have different colors, when the square is rotated, it looks as though the corners are flickering. This rhythmic animation echoes the rhythmic, repetitive geometries of a quilt.&nbsp; &nbsp; For the figurative sequences, there are 20-20 frames/quilt squares that are arranged on the quilt sequentially. I used fabric, clay, charcoal, crayons, markers, and paint on glass. The skate clip was ideal for this since it is punctuated with different shots of various tricks. For each shot, I tried a new technique.For the rotoscoping, I hand traced the individual frames, and for the fabric sequences, for example, I added the original video (broken up into frames) as a reference onion skin in Dragonframe. The film is a collage both aesthetically and in terms of the editing technique. I first filmed on a Bolex camera and then used ink to paint onto the developed film strips. The beginning has more shots of recognizable things, filmed in a more abstract manner. I sought&nbsp; abstract, geometric shapes in the figural realm and colored them in. The video gets more abstract as it continues with just shapes and color at the end.
